Around 1760, King Charles III asked the Spanish authorities governing the territories of America, Oceania and Asia to send the available information on indigenous languages to Spain. “In California alone, there were more than 100 different dialects. “Some of these languages have been lost”. Thanks to the Spanish administration of the Enlightenment century, a primary source is preserved at the height of the 18th century that provides information on the state of the indigenous languages, some of which are in use today and others that have disappeared. These #AGI Vocabularies have a high lexicological, anthropological, ethnological and cultural value; they illustrate the actions of the Spanish administration in the New World.
