Human rights in the Trujillo dictatorship: description and digitisation of documents from the Presidency of the Republic fund (1st phase)
The General Archive of the Dominican Republic carried out this project, which consisted of selecting, describing and digitising files from the AGN’s documentary collections relating to people arrested, tortured, sentenced for political reasons, asesinadas, desaparecidas, expropiadas de sus bienes, perseguidas, asiladas, deportadas, repatriadas, exiliadas y los considerados desafectas y/o enemigas por no apoyar las políticas de la dictadura de Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina (1930-1961) en la República Dominicana.
The general aim was to create a catalogue of victims of the dictatorship, which would make it easier for users to access the documents corresponding to the period.
This tool makes available to users information contained in the press, official and private documents, located in the funds of the Presidency of the Republic, the Secretariat of State for the Interior and Police, the National Army, the Attorney General’s Office and the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs, available at the AGN, which lead to knowledge of the most varied and aberrant forms of violation of people’s basic rights.
The catalogue is divided into five categories, each made up of different types of documents. The first group contains information on those arrested, tortured and sentenced for political reasons; while the second refers to the murdered and disappeared, the third includes documents relating to the expropriation of property by the dictator, family members and those associated with him, the fourth group of documents is a list of the persecuted, asylees, deportees, repatriates and exiles. The last has to do with the regime’s disaffected.
In the following video, Orquídea Correa, head of the National Archives’ Description Department, tells us about the development of the project:

Spanish exiles in the Dominican Republic
The migration of Spanish exiles to the Dominican Republic after the Civil War, as in other Latin American countries, was very significant and had an important socio-cultural impact on the host community.
With this project, the General Archive of the Nation wanted to publicise the memory of the Spanish exiles in 1939 and 1940 who arrived in the Dominican Republic.
The documentation includes residence permit forms, journals and magazines, photos from the Civil War and photos and negatives from the reunions of the Spanish exiles , which will be identified, described and digitised, with the negatives also being recovered and all this information being made available on the web.

Translation of oral sources: Spanish refugees in the Dominican Republic, new life stories”
Oral history projects are an indispensable source for collecting the personal experiences of witnesses and family members related to human rights violations and struggles.
The implementation of this project consisted of the transcription and dissemination of eight interviews with Spaniards who arrived in Santo Domingo after the Civil War in 1940 as political refugees.
These interviews are in the General Archive of the Nation of the Dominican Republic as a result of the Oral History Programme maintained by the institution.
The transcriptions of this material are very useful as they allow researchers access to these sources.
