Preservation and maintenance of the Emigrant Register Fund

The National Archive of the Republic of Cuba has among its collections the “Emigrants’ Register”, which covers the years 1865-1959, and records the entry or exit of citizens from the country, providing basic data on the identification of individuals.
It is possible to find in these records people who were exiled due to armed conflicts, as in the case of Spanish people who travelled to different Latin American countries during the Civil War.
This collection needed to be treated from a conservation point of view. Thanks to the materials acquired with the Iberarchivos grant, it was possible to improve the conservation conditions of the archive, protecting it from dust, insects and humidity.
It is a file whose paper is of poor quality and is constantly manipulated, so its protection was essential to avoid its deterioration and loss of information and that it remained accessible for consultation.

Project 2008/130. CUBA
Conservation, promotion and dissemination of the Holguín Emergency Court fund

The Holguín Provincial Historical Archive, officially created in 1983, is part of the Cuban Archives Network, attached to the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment. It is a public institution designed to honour and disseminate the documentary heritage of the Holguin territory.
Among the archive’s collections, we find the collection of the Holguín Emergency Court, a judicial unit which, among its functions, was the prosecution of the combatants who fought against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

Thanks to Iberarchivos’ support, they were able to buy the conservation material needed for the cleaning and proper installation of the archive’s files, which is the first step towards making this documentation accessible to research. A total of 21 filing cabinets have been installed containing more than 450 Emergency Court files.
