“Memory and transoceanic exile. La Casa de la Memoria y el exilio gaditano en Argentina”

The general aim of this initiative is to promote Andalusia’s historical values of freedom, democracy and solidarity and to project this image from the House of Memory La Sauceda in Jimena de la Frontera (Cádiz) [Spain] to the descendants of the Gaditan exile in Argentina.
The idea of the project was to connect the descendants of the Gaditanos who were forced to go into exile after the Spanish civil war. The initiative takes place in the exiles’ place of origin, the province of Cádiz, in Andalusia. The aim is to highlight the values of that democratic Andalusia and to disseminate them from the present day with a community that has been uprooted from this land but can once again have a bond with it through the development of this project.
One of the planned activities was to contact education centres, citizens’ associations and institutions in different parts of Argentina where descendants of Gaditan exiles live, in order to share the experiences of these exiles.

During the course of the project, contact was made with relatives from the La Sauceda area who were descendants of Gaditan exiles in Argentina to explain the project to them, and with teachers and historians specialising in Republican exile in Argentina.
The project information was incorporated into the ICA-AtoM free software database and the web platform and audiovisual channel for the development of the project were set up.
The second part of the project consisted of contacting teaching centres, citizens’ associations and institutions in Argentina around descendants of exiled Gaditanos and with descendants of exiles there in Argentina.
All this information was collected on the platform designed and on the YouTube channel.

Alongside the work of organising their funds, teaching activities have been carried out to disseminate them. We can highlight the “Archivistics Workshop” held with the Associated Centre of the National University of Distance Education (UNED) of Cádiz and its Olvera Classroom on 27 and 28 April 2019 as a university extension activity entitled “Archivistics of Memory”.
The aims of this initiative were “to make known the documentary collections of the Casa de la Memoria La Sauceda Archive, so that they can serve as a source of historical research; to train students in the basics of archival science; to train students in understanding the characteristics of this specific archive, designed to safeguard, store and disseminate collections related to historical memory; and to initiate students into the practice of classifying, ordering and describing archive documents.
