Reconditioning of Fundos e Coleções sobre direitos humanos no Brasil e na América Latina, pertencentes ao acervo do CEDIC/PUC-SP

The collection of the Centro de Documentação da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo stands out for bringing together documentation of great political and scientific importance, which mainly focuses on the preservation of records of the actions of social movements and human rights defenders linked to Catholic religious and lay people who have been active in São Paulo, Brazil and Latin America since the 1950s.
The project, developed with the support of the ADAI Programme, aimed to sanitise and recondition the collections and collections on Human Rights in Brazil and Latin America, with a view to the long-term preservation of documents produced by popular and human rights organisations and movements that were active in the 1950s to 1990s.
The technical procedures adopted took into consideration the purchase of suppression materials (paper and polyethylene) that offered chemical stability of its material, resistance to agents of degradation, reduction of environmental impact and inadequate handling, as well as protection and physical support for the documents. Therefore, the team itself made layers, envelopes, neutral and alkaline paper wrappings of ph 7.0 to 8.5, in different sizes and thicknesses, and purchased packaging, such as archival polypropylene boxes and polyethylene wrappings with archival quality for the conditioning of textual and iconographic documents.
With this, we were able to apply two levels of protection: primary and secondary conditioning, as well as the furniture itself (at the moment, compact and sliding archives).
The funding received has made possible the adequate conditioning of the collections and, consequently, a better identification of the documentary collections, promoting, besides the updating of CEDIC’s online data systems (CEDIC’s Guide and the Electronic Catalogue of the Support Library and the Newspaper Library), the cultural dissemination of the collection. We succeeded in carrying out educational activities at the Centre’s own headquarters and virtually by means of virtual exhibitions on socially relevant topics.

Democratisation of the historical memory of children and adolescents: preservation and organisation of the Juízo dos Orfaos documentary collection.

Among the documentation of Justice in the custody of the State Archive of São Paulo (Autos cívies and Autos crime, from the 17th to the 20th century), the “Juízo dos Orfãos” collection is very significant for its wealth of information.
They are handwritten processes that inform about inquiries related to husbands, inheritances, guardianships, work contracts, escapes, apprehensions, family power inquiries, crimes, poverty, abandonment, among others. Thus, it allows us to retrace the history of childhood and youth from the early colonial period to the first decades of the twentieth century and much of the documentation of the nineteenth century.
Through the archival treatment of this archive, it was possible to bring out of silence and anonymity the violence, humiliation and daily deprivations imposed by society on children and adolescents and their relationship with justice.
Thanks to the project, we identified more than 50 series and worked on the electronic catalogue with more than 4000 records, each record corresponding to a process.
We highlight the series corresponding to the Orders of Payment, Orders of Cominatória, Orders of Apprehension/Surrender of Minors, Orders of Assignment, etc., from which appear data such as name, enclosure, description of the process and other types of observations.
