The protection of archive documents is fundamental, as they bear witness to the rights of citizens and the experiences of our societies, as well as being a manifestation of national identity and memory. The physical conditions in which they are stored and the environmental changes that occur in most archives, in addition to careless handling over the centuries, have been factors that have worsened the state of conservation of these materials.

This guide aims to improve the management and conservation of documents, offering practical tools and standardising concepts in this field.

The collaboration of numerous Ibero-American technicians and institutions, within the framework of the Iberarchivos Programme, has made it possible to create this tool for protecting the archival heritage common to Ibero-America. The guide was coordinated by Portugal and created by a varied working group, including participants from Portugal, Chile, Spain and the Programme’s own Technical Unit.
