At the XXVI Meeting of the Intergovernmental Council of Iberarchives, held in March 2023 in Toluca de Lerdo (Mexico), the General Archive of the Nation of Peru requested the collaboration of the Iberarchives Programme to alleviate the devastation caused by Cyclone Yaku. The Intergovernmental Council declared its solidarity with the Peruvian people and, as a sign of the Programme’s solidarity, project 2022/026 “Intervention for the rescue of documentary heritage affected by the damage left by the passage of Cyclone Yaku with floods that affected the Regional Archives of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad, northern Peru” was approved.
The project received 25,000 euros and is based on the following actions:
– Setting up brigades to take basic kits to the affected archives.
– Setting up a team to assess the damaged infrastructure.
– Training workshops on emergency preparedness for archive staff.
The regional archives of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad, including the archives of the jurisdiction, together hold around 10,000 linear metres of documents. It is estimated that the intervention to recover the affected documentation will amount to around 1,000 linear metres.
The project began last May and is a clear example of the solidarity of the countries that make up Iberarchivos and the sense of archival cooperation in Ibero-America.
