“Personnel file of the academic and Emeritus Professor, Dr. Leticia del Rosario”. The University Archives selects the personnel file of the academic Dr. Leticia del Rosario. Dr. Leticia del Rosario was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico in 1914. She received her Bachelor of Science, Manga Cum Laude, with a major in physics and mathematics, from the University of Puerto Rico in 1935, a Master of Science, with a major in atomic physics from the University of Chicago in 1941, and a Ph.D. in physics from the same university in 1948. He then went to Oak Ridge National Laboratory to take a specialised course in radioisotopes. She began teaching at the University of Puerto Rico in 1941 until 1973 in the Department of Physics and Mathematics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, directing that department from 1949 to 1954. In addition, she was head of the Department of Physical Sciences of the Faculty of General Studies from January 1, 1964 to 1966. In 1970-1973 she was the first woman Dean of Studies at the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, (Certification No. 46, 1970-71 CES). As an academic at the UPR Rio Piedras Campus, she directed the In-service Institute for Secondary School Teachers of Science and Mathematics project (1961-62) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and directed the Cosmic Ray Laboratory from which research projects were developed that resulted in publication in the most prestigious journal in physics, Physical Review. Leticia del Rosario was the first Puerto Rican woman to obtain a PhD in physics, a pioneer in physics, a prestigious scientist, former director of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and Professor Emeritus in 1974. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 95.
