As has been the case every year since its creation in 2008, the International Archives Day proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) aims to highlight the importance of archives as cultural heritage and also as one of the main sources of information. Archives provide significant evidence for the economic, political, social and cultural development of humanity.
That’s why the Iberarchivos archival cooperation programme wants to celebrate “International Archives Day” on 9 June with the entire archival community. To this end, we want to commemorate this great date with celebrations from Monday 7 to Friday 11 June 2021, celebrating the third International Archives Week # IAW2021. This year the International Council on Archives (ICA) has chosen the theme #EmpowerLosArchivos.
Iberarchivos has always been committed to the memory of Latin America. For the programme it is essential to empower the archives of the 18 member countries, which is why, throughout its 23 years of creation, Iberarchivos has done so through its archive projects that enable networking and collaboration, a constant example of how archives of any kind and the profession can be strengthened to help achieve better development of archives in Latin America.
An example of the empowerment of archives are the 1,374 projects co-financed by Iberarchivos that promote goals and objectives for the archival profession and institutions through support that translates into the preservation of Ibero-American memory, but which also makes it possible to give visibility to the important work that archives represents in all sectors in favour of and for citizenship, which leads us to strengthen accountability and transparency, through access to information to monitor the work carried out by governments and ensure that citizens can protect their rights.
From the programme, we want to invite you to reflect on how you can continue to empower archives throughout Latin America. To this end, we invite archives and records management professionals and organisations to take part in all the activities prepared by Iberarchivos’ 18 member countries.
Remember that Iberarchivos is committed to the memory of the Ibero-American peoples, which is why it is essential to strengthen the bonds of solidarity and collaboration in order to continue strengthening archives.
