The archival cooperation programme has collaborated in the implementation of 1,351 projects throughout Ibero-America.
In the 2018 call, one of the selected projects was 2018/072, from Mexico, called ‘Poema para una canción: preservación y acceso al archivo personal de la pianista y compositora Judith Pérez Romero’ (Poem for a song: preservation and access to the personal archive of the pianist and composer Judith Pérez Romero). This project provides insight into the life and work of the pianist through the virtual exhibition “100 years of Judith”, a virtual exhibition of the personal audiovisual archive of the artist Judith Perez Romero through the Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán.
The Yucatecan artist Judith Pérez Romero built from her performance and leadership a solid professional career in the music of the Yucatecan peninsula. In 2017, her personal archive was donated to the Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán, one year after her death. With this donation we can say that Judith surprised us again.
100 years of Judith’ is a virtual exhibition that emerges from this personal archive and is approached from a gender perspective. Looking from both axes at the diversity of documentary media in Judith’s archive implies deciding, as she always did, to construct a narrative of her trajectory based on her own voice and adding that of other women, far from totalising and hegemonic discourses. Therefore, this exhibition is a narrative fragment, one that seeks to converge with the traces of other women contemporary to Judith, in time and, above all, in context, those other women artists, those of yesterday and today, trained from the classroom, in different disciplines and scenarios, in creation and day to day.
