The Iberarchivos cooperation programme extends its congratulations and recognition to Jorge Alfredo Rafael Ortiz Sotelo on his recent appointment as the new Institutional Head of the General Archive of the Nation of Peru.
Ortiz Sotelo is a retired frigate captain and holds a degree in Maritime and Naval Sciences, a master’s degree in military strategy and a bachelor’s degree in history from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP). He specialised in Maritime History at the University of Saint Andrews (Scotland).
As part of his professional career, he has worked as a professor at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, the Escuela Superior de Guerra Naval and other national academic centres. He has also taught in educational institutions in the United States.
Some of his positions have been: Secretary General of the Ibero-American Maritime and Naval History Association, President of the Bolivarian Society of Peru and Member of the Academies of History of Chile and Ecuador; and of the Academy of Naval and Maritime History of Chile.
He was also Executive Director of the Peru-Ecuador Binational Border Development Plan. He is also the author of numerous books and research articles on maritime, political and family history.
