The International Advisory Committee (IAC) of UNESCO’s Memory of the Worldprogramme recommended78 new inscriptions on the UNESCO Memory of the World Registerat its meeting in Paris from 24-27 October.
Of these 78 new inscriptions, 15 concern Ibero-American documentary heritage, with documents or archives from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Portugal.
In a recent decision adopted by the Executive Board (202 EX/15), UNESCO Member States also reaffirmed the objective of the Memory of the World Programme, expressed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2015 in the Recommendation concerning the preservation of and access to documentary heritage, including digital heritage, which stresses “the importance of documentary heritage in promoting the exchange of knowledge for greater understanding and dialogue to foster peace and respect for freedom, democracy, human rights and dignity” and considers that “the preservation of documentary heritage and its long-term accessibility underpin fundamental freedoms of opinion, expression and information as human rights”.
The Memory of the World Register now includes a total of 427 documents and collections from five continents, preserved on media ranging from stone to celluloid and from parchment to sound recordings.
