The Uruguayan project approved by Iberarchivos, 2015/104 ‘Colección Cervantina “Arturo E. Xalambrí”: organisation, conservation and dissemination of the documents in its archive’, began its development on 1 February, based on tasks of preventive conservation and organisation of the Arturo E. Xalambrí archive.
The beneficiary institution of this project is the Asociación Instituto de Estudios Empresariales de Montevideo, and in this case it will focus on this Archive, with enormous documentary value, and a primary source of History, Literature, and Art, which has always fought for education and culture, always taking Cervantes and his work as a central figure.
The state of the material it conserves is very varied: there are various files on paper that have deteriorated, and photographs that have not been conditioned, among other examples. The most important material to be worked on is the correspondence between Xalambrí and renowned Cervantes scholars and important figures in the cultural sphere of the time. Berta Igoa, a graduate in Archivology, is in charge of this project. The first stage of development has just begun at the CEDEI (Centro de Documentación y Estudios de Iberoamérica), and its objective is the organisation and preventive conservation of the Archive’s documents, always following the guidelines for the preservation of documents on paper. Once completed, it will be accessible for research purposes.
