Today, 28 October 2016, in the city of Cartagena de Indias in Colombia, the XXV Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government begins on the theme of “Youth, Entrepreneurship and Education”.
The Ibero-American Conference is a political consultation and cooperation mechanism created at the 1st Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in 1991 in Guadalajara (Mexico). Its centrepiece is the celebration of the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government and it mainly addresses issues such as education, culture, innovation, employment and institutional strengthening, among others. The Ibero-American Conference has 29 cooperation programmes, initiatives and projects.
The Ibero-American Conference is made up of the Summit of Heads of State and Government, the Meetings of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Meetings of National Co-ordinators and Co-operation Officers, the Pro Tempore Secretariat, the Ibero-American General Secretariat(SEGIB) and the Sectoral Ministerial Meetings.
The theme chosen for this 2016 Summit is “Youth, Entrepreneurship and Education”, in consideration of the important challenges facing Ibero-America on these issues, as well as the path travelled since the 1st Ibero-American Summit in 1991 to date. While the topic of Education has already been dealt with at the summits on seven occasions, Youth has only been dealt with once (2008) and Entrepreneurship will be explored for the first time at this 25th Summit.
The countries taking part in the Ibero-American Summit are Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Uruguay and Venezuela.
